Thelma Ackerman Obituary

Thelma G. Ackerman, 95 passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones at the home of her granddaughter in Acworth, Georgia.

Thelma was born November 22, 1928, in Beaufort, South Carolina to Georgia Gadson and Epstein Brown. She was raised by her grandparents, Arthur Gadson and Lunessa Yates Gadson, after the untimely death of her mother. Her grandparents provided a loving and nurturing home for her.

On August 1, 1947, she married Claborn Benjamin Ackerman, the love of her life. They had three children, Valeria Sims, Veronica Bryant, and Claborn Ackerman, Jr.  After Thelma and CB were married, they relocated to New York City, where they raised their family. She took a job in a factory where she worked diligently for the next 30 years before returning home to Ruffin, South Carolina.

Thelma lived a life of service. She was a dedicated member of the Usher Board at Buckhead United Methodist Church for over 30 years. She served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross for more than 15 years and was honored as a devoted member of the CERT Volunteers (community-based emergency volunteers) for over 10 years of service.

Thelma was known for her warm smile, gentle demeanor, and kind heart. Anyone who knew Thelma knew that she always provided a warm meal. Her fried chicken was second to none. She always cooked for her family and friends. It was always done with selfless love and genuine affection.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Claborn Ackerman; children, Valeria Sims, Veronica Bryant and Claborn Ackerman, Jr. and grandsons, Rodney and Timothy.

She lived a long, full life and will be deeply missed. She leaves a cherished legacy for her family and loved ones thru four grandchildren, Tony (Tonya), James (Darlene), Iesha-Loren, Changa (Melinda); 16 great grandchildren, Timia, Rodney, Tony Jr., Taniqua, Timai, Toriel, James Jr., Bryce, Sydney, Whitney, Britney, Paige, Robert (EJ), Gerald, Lyric and Caleb; 14 great-great grandchildren, along with  numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.
