Ms. Shirley Henderson-Howard was the daughter of the late Cleveland and Lille Mae
Henderson. She was born on October 19, 1949, in Smoaks, SC and transitioned this life
into eternal rest on Monday, May 13, 2024. She lived a life dedicated to God, family and
church and touched the lives of all who came to know her.
Shirley was raised in the home of her grandparents, the late Lou and Elea Shider. Her
faith was nurtured at Springtown United Methodist Church. She loved serving the Lord
with singing, her presence, gifts and services. She was also a member of Mt. Zion AME
in Plainfield, NJ. She later after moving back to South Carolina, she rejoined Springtown
United Methodist Church and later joined New Life United Methodist Church,
Walterboro, SC.
Shirley was educated in the public schools of Colleton County and was a 1967 graduate
of Ruffin High School. After graduation, she reunited with her mother, the late Lillie Mae
Henderson, in Plainfield, NJ. She was employed at Reckitt Benkiser in Belle Meade, NJ
from 1972 until her retirement.
Shirley was a quiet, yet always filled with joy and laughter. She used to sing along with
her maternal grandmother and aunts in a group called The Gospel Joyetts. She would
travel alongside them to school auditoriums, churches and sang on WQIZ radio station,
performing various gospel songs.
Shirley loved the outdoors. She loved gardening and planting her flowers. She loved
traveling and spending time with family.
She was married to the late Virgil Hooker. To this union, two children were born. In
1992, she married the late Ronald Howard.
She leaves to cherish her sweet, precious memories, a daughter, Lanissa Hooker of
Walterboro, SC, a son, Virgil Hooker of Sanford, FL, four grandchildren, Aliayah Barrett
and Nasir Barrett of Walterboro, SC. Xavier Hooker, of Ohio and Bryson Riddick of
North Carolina, a godson, Terell Lonon, North Carolina, a special aunt, Ernetha Folk,
and Joanne Bryant (Willie) of Smoaks, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews other
relatives and friends.
