Mr. Robert McKnight, Jr, eldest son of Robert McKnight, Sr. and Alice M. Williams McKnight, was born, in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, on December 20, 1942.
He attended Colleton County Schools and afterwards moved to Brooklyn and Queens, New York.
In his school years, he consistently performed well and participated in the marching band, playing the trumpet.
During Robert’s growing-up years, it was expected that he and his brothers would be committed to working closely with their father’s wood-delivery business. It was a lucrative means of living during the 1940s-1960s, even beyond. Our family has memories of being awakened by customers’ requests, needing anywhere from fifty cents to two-dollar bundles of wood, in order to make it through the night. Being the oldest son, taking the lead, he and his brothers faithfully took care of those much-needed requests. However, this taught him and his brothers much about responsibility, tenacity, and trustworthiness.
Further during his younger years, he was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Walterboro, having participated in Sunday School, the Youth Choir, the Methodist Youth Fellowship, and related youth ministries and activities.
Upon graduation, he hungered to see the bright lights of New York where he met the love-of-his-life, Violet Kinard, and they were later united in holy matrimony.
Having learned the value of work at a very early age, Robert was employed by Rose Trucking in New York for 32 years prior to his retirement. Firmly continuing the legacy instilled in him by his parents about serving the Lord, he attended Metropolitan Community Church in Harlem, New York. Through the years, he still remained faithful, supporting Wesley and New Life United Methodist Churches in Walterboro, South Carolina, Greater St. Mark AME Church in Hemingway, SC, and Canaan Baptist Church in Round O, South Carolina.
Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife, parents; son, Garry McKnight; brothers, Henry McKnight and Sylvester McKnight, and sister, Louise Rand.
Left to cherish his memories are his sons; Roger McKnight, Terrance McKnight, Vincent McKnight and Erwin McKnight; sister, Vera McKnight Bodison; grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
