"But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted."
Matthew 23: 11-12
Richard Calvin Brooks, Jr. was born on October 25, 1963, in Walterboro, South Carolina, to Gloria A. Peake and the late Richard Calvin Brooks, Sr. He was known affectionately as "Ricky" or "Rick" by his family and friends. On Saturday, August 23, 2025, Ricky traded time for eternity - joining his loved ones who have gone before him.
Ricky's parents moved to New York City where he spent his early years. Always protective of her grandsons, his grandmother the late Rosa Magwood asked that Ricky and his brother Derrick live with her in White Hall to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city life. After moving to White Hall, Ricky completed his early education in Colleton County public schools. At age 15, he moved with his family to Atlanta, Georgia where he matriculated to Walker High School where he graduated in 1982. During his high school years, he excelled in track and martial arts - developing a discipline that shaped his determination and resilience throughout life. A lover of helping others, Ricky worked at the Marriott and Peachtree Plaza hotels in Atlanta for several years.
In 2000, Ricky moved back home to White Hall. He participated in programs with Magnolia Place for several years where his presence was treasured by those who made his acquaintance. Always willing to assist anyone in need, Ricky spent a lot of time providing transportation for those in need in his community. In his later years, Ricky worked as a custodian at New Covenant, where he was remembered for his great listening skills, gentle spirit, and quiet demeanor.
Ricky enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—watching the news, relaxing with a good movie, going to the beach, traveling, and sharing music with those he loved. Ricky valued family above all else and was very close to his younger brother Derrick. Being the extrovert he was, Derrick was definitely his brother's keeper! Ricky respected the love he and his brother had for each other and more importantly, the love they had for their mother Gloria. Ricky enjoyed the time he spent with his mother driving her anywhere she desired to go!
Ricky was preceded in death by his father, Richard Sr., his younger brother, Derrick A. Brooks, and his baby sister, Angel.
He leaves to cherish his memories: His devoted mother, Gloria A. Peake, White Hall, SC; one nephew, D'Mario Thomas, Atlanta, GA; two uncles, Willie Brooks, Jersey City, New Jersey and Willie Williams, White Hall, South Carolina, along with a host of cousins, and friends.
Family and friends will always remember Ricky for his kindness, generosity, and steady presence. His warmth left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
