"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4: 6-7
Wherever we go, from birth throughout our life and into the passage of death, the Lord is always and ever with us. When the time comes to bid this life farewell, we should find comfort in knowing that our Heavenly Father will be there to guide us to our new home, HEAVEN! On May 26, 1950, the world became a little brighter because Elizabeth Marie Gathers, was born to the late Maybell Wilson Gathers and Harold Williams. As the youngest in the family, she was given the nickname, “Lell” as she was loved and spoiled by her older siblings.
Education was very important to Elizabeth, so she matriculated through the Colleton County school system, graduating from Colleton High School in May 1968. After graduation, Elizabeth attended and completed Job Corp in Nebraska. She yearned for higher education but had to put it on hold to help raise her sister, Joann’s children. In August 1974, Elizabeth began attending Allen University, Columbia, SC, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree, graduating in May 1978. Armed with this degree, she began her teaching career at Jonesville Elementary School, where she taught fourth grade until her retirement. During her tenure as an educator, her passion was not only teaching, but seeing the smiles on her students’ faces for their hard work and achievements. She was firm but nevertheless she definitely cared.
At an early age Elizabeth was baptized, converted, and became a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Walterboro, South Carolina. She would remain an active lifelong member and worshipped God whole-heartedly until her passing. Active in her community, she was also a proud and dedicated member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
On Saturday, May 14, 2022, the world became a little dimmer; however, Heaven rejoiced because they welcomed our dear Elizabeth Marie Gathers, home. She was released from a time of suffering and is now resting in the arms of our loving Savior, Jesus Christ.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by; three sisters, Joan Wilson Brown (Willie), Emma L. (Rev. Sherman) Grant and Annie Ruth Wilson; one brother, Robert Lee Williams. Wonderful memories of a life well-lived are shared by those closest to her: two sisters, Aserine Blevins of Chicago, Illinois and Millie Brown of Walterboro, SC; two brothers, Linwood Williams of Walterboro, SC and Richard Gathers of Hawaii; one sister in law, Pearline Williams of Goose Creek, SC; those whom she raised as her own children, Janie (James) Williams of Pineland, SC, Alexander Brown of Richmond, VA, Jeremiah (Sharon) Brown of Petersburg, VA, Letha (Isaiah) Smith of Cottageville, SC and Ricky Brown of Walterboro, SC; very special god son, Christopher Brown of Texas; god daughter, Makeda Myers of Charleston, SC; 2 4ever friends, Mary Jordan of Walterboro, SC and Gloria Myers of Charleston, SC; along with a host of numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
