Ms.Bernice Givens

Humbly, We announce the passing of Ms. Bernice Givens , 86, of Walterboro SC. Her memory will forever be cherished by family and those who loved and knew her.

Graveside Services for Ms.Givens  are scheduled for Friday : May 1, 2020 at 11:00 A.M.: Zion Baptist Church Cemetery . 

Ms. Bernice Givens was born July 23, 1933, in Green Pond, SC. She is the second of six children born to the late Deacon Norris “Fred” Givens and Rebecca “Bell” Gibbs. She attended Ivenia Brown Elementary School in Green Pond, SC. Her education ended abruptly during her tenth grade in order to assist her family. At the age of seventeen Bernice moved to Manhattan, NY with her Aunt Helen to better her life. Shortly after she realized her purpose in life was to help other better themselves and their health. Bernice became a CAN for hospice where she worked until her retirement. One of Bernice’s pleasures was bowling. While in NY, Ms. Bernice joined a bowling lead. Ms. Bernice was an exceptional bowler, accumulating numerous trophies. After retirement, Bernice moved back to South Carolina with her family where she later obtained her GED and worked in the school system for almost 8 years and assisted with raising five of her grandchildren. 

At an early age Bernice accepted Christ, joining Zion Baptist Church in Wiggins, SC, where she served on the usher board, faithfully. In 2019, she became a member of New Beginnings Word Ministry, where she continued to serve faithfully until her health declined.  

Ms. Bernice Givens departed this life on Saturday, April 25, 2020. She was preceded in death by both parents, son, Ralph “Bubba’ Givens, sister, Ethel “Etha Mae” Goodwin, brother, Henry Givens, and granddaughter, Cordea Givens.  

Ms. Bernice leaves to cherish her memories: children, Deacon Rodney (Anna) Givens of Beaufort, SC, Cynthia (Horace) Garrett of Walterboro, SC, Lloyd (Terri) Givens of Knoxville, Tennessee, Diana Givens of Walterboro, SC, and James (Trelawny) Bullock of Georgetown, Texas; three adopted grandchildren Asha (Anthony) Smith of Orangeburg, SC, Shantanique Givens-Franklin and Charles Franklin Jr of Walterboro, SC; two sisters Albertha “Sister” Givens of Baltimore, Maryland, Elizabeth “Betty” Givens of Green Pond, SC, and one brother, Clarence Givens of Beaufort, SC;grandchildren reared in the home Zaire Mason of Walterboro, SC, Joyce Bullock of Bronx, NY, and Dejanire Givens of Walterboro, SC; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; special aunts,Beatrice Givens of Charleston, SC and Helen Blessinger of Long Island, NY; special son-in-law Charles Franklin Sr.; special friend, Silvia Joyner; special cousin, Marion “HB” Givens Jr.
