Respectfully, we honor the legacy of the life of Mrs. Vernell Simmons. Mother Simmons, 88, was a resident of Walterboro, South Carolina.
Mrs. Vernell Washington Simmons was born in Catholic Hill on October 12, 1931 to the late Joseph and Loretta Washington. She entered into eternal rest on Sunday morning December 22, 2019. She was educated at the Catholic School in Catholic Hill and received her High School Diploma. She later on married Thomas Benjamin Simmons and together they had 11 children. Seven of which were born in Walterboro, SC prior to them moving to Miami, FL to provide a better way of living for their family and later birth the remaining four. She lived in Miami for 33 years where she worked as a residential and hotel housekeeper. Although, away from home she continued in her faith at, Holy Redeemer, a local catholic church. She was a faithful wife, mother and servant of the Lord. Vernell later returned to Catholic Hill to live in 1991 until her final days. Back home she continued to work in the Colleton County School District at Ivenia Brown Elementary, where she mentored a number of kids and worked until it closed. She continued her nurturing ways at Green Pond Center working with the elderly as well as in the community. Her favorite past time, joy and love was making quilts and gardening.
She is preceded in death by her two sisters Nancy Green and Minnie Lloyd and one son Jerome Simmons. She leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved her and now to cherish her lasting memory, 8 sons and 2 daughters: Francis Thomas Simmons (Mary) of Silas, AL; William Anthony Simmons, of Jacksonville, FL; John Henry Simmons of Seattle, WA; Mary Louis Saunders of Jacksonville, FL; Harry Lee Simmons of White Hall, SC; Thomas Benjamin Simmons(Sylvia) of Miami, FL; Alexander Dean Simmons of North Miami Beach, FL; Annette Sanders(Barnard) of Greenville, SC; Danny Simmons, of Miami, FL; and Jackie Simmons of Homestead, FL. She has 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
