Mrs. Verna Mae Wilson Bartley, affectionately known as Pat, was born on October 25, 1940, in Colleton County to late Ada and Jeremiah Wilson. She was called to be with her Heavenly Father on October 14, 2022.
At an early age Verna was educated at Piney Grove Elementary School and attended St. John Church. After graduating Colleton High School, she relocated to New York City where she later attended Easter Memorial Church of God in Christ. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to her husband Henry Bartley on July 2, 1962. Verna was gainfully employed at Bronx Lebanon Hospital for more than 35 years as a Nutrition Assistant.
Living in the same Bronx community for over 50 years, “Miss Pat” was highly respected by the residents in the Tinton Avenue building where she also served on the building’s tenant association. When her health began to decline, she and her son Leander moved to Connecticut to be with her son Derwin and his wife Otelia, who lovingly cared for her. Leander sat by her bedside faithfully and devotedly took care of her needs in any way that was necessary to insure her comfort.
Verna had an infectious laugh, impeccable style, and a love for shopping, especially from QVC and the Home Shopping Network. She had a way of greeting people; she was known for saying “Heyyyy (insert your name here)!” She loved gospel music and would attend gospel singings (concerts). Verna was very generous; she would always have something to pull out of her closet to give to a family member or friend. She was also known for throwing down in the kitchen, especially her home cooked turkey wings and macaroni salad.
Preceding her in death along with her parents and husband are brothers, Jerry, and James Wilson.
Verna leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Cynthia Gantt of Georgia, sons, Leander and Derwin Bartley (Otelia) of Connecticut, and Barry Bartley Sr., of New York; daughter-in-law Thais Bartley of Georgia; eight grandchildren, Tanequa and Wendell Tyrell Gantt, Delvon, Keasia, Barry Jr., Jalen, Trevon and Justin Bartley; four great-grandchildren Alina Marie and Javon Bartley, Devin and Ashtyn Gantt; four sisters, Martha Ann Harrison (James) and Geraldine Neely (Carl) of South Carolina, Annie Ruth Grant (Arthur) of Georgia and Sharon Wilson of New York; three brothers, Howard Wilson of South Carolina, Andrew Howard (Judy) of Connecticut and Marion Wilson (Marion) of Boston,. six sisters-in-law, Bertha Wilson, Betsy Shanks, Christine Simmons, Edith Cartledge, Roszenia Johnson and Romona Wilson and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
