Mrs. Shirley M. Whitfield, daughter of the late Mrs. Maggie Williams Singleton and Deacon Mose Singleton, was born June 18, 1960, on the Cherokee Plantation of Yemassee, South Carolina. Reared in the Roadside community, Shirley received her early education in the public schools of Colleton and Charleston Counties. Upon receiving her high school in 1978, Shirley enlisted with the United States Army. She would serve faithfully for six years, until her honorable discharge in 1986. Returning home, she entered the workforce, working in various places such as the public school system and most recently as a CNA private sitter with Priority Home Health Services.
Shirley was joined in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Michael Pollock, and this union would be blessed with her one son, her pride and joy, Paul. As that union dissolved, she would then be joined in Matrimony to Mr. Eddie “Jessie” Whitfield, until his passing in 2014. Affectionately known as “Laine” by all her family and friends, she was love and loved life. She was a very outspoken person; however, she was a true free spirit who possessed the kindest of hearts. If there was a need and she knew about it, she was there and gave her last to help anyone.
