Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes me will never die.” ~John 11:25-26
Safe in her Savior’s arms, Pernice Boatwright Hudson Jones, age 92, passed away on Monday, January 9,2023, at the Pruitt Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Walterboro, S.C., where she had been a resident patient since July 2020.
Born Sunday, November 16, 1930, Pernice was the daughter of the late Clee and Edith Washington Boatwright. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husbands, Prentice Hudson; and Richard Jones; her dear son, Roger Hudson; uncle and aunt who loved her like a daughter, Luke and Katie Washington; among other loved ones whom she adored.
A graduate of Ruffin High School, Pernice was one of three members of the mighty class of 1949. She was employed by the Smoaks Manufacturing Company; and subsequently retired from the Walterboro Dress Manufacturing Company. A devoted lifelong member of Buckhead United Methodist Church, Pernice was one of the original members of the Young Adult Choir; Sunday School Superintendent for many years; Usher; Communion Steward; Member of United Women of Faith; the Family and Community Leaders - Colleton, Ruffin, Washington Club; as well as, a Member of the BZS Community Center Council. If you were privileged to experience her leading the Usher’s procession, visions of her bop and strut were definitely a sight to behold.
Perseverance, dedicated, dependable, feisty, fun-loving and life of the party are but a few heart-warming descriptors that capture the essence of Pernice’s spirit. Her true enjoyment was gardening - if there was a plant to be had, she took it in and patiently nurtured it. When and wherever her yard revealed a vacant spot, she was destined to plant some sort of flower, vegetable or bush. Her other pleasures included evoking laughter through the offering of her many sayings and catchphrases, dressing to impress, traveling, watching and attending sporting and social events, trying new recipes and indulging in tasty seafood. Although Pernice’s last few years had been disrupted by the progression of Alzheimers, the roots of her beliefs remained steadfast and were often evidenced through expression of her favorite sentiment, “God is MY God.”
Pernice will be remembered as a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, friend, and community and Christian servant. Despite the void, cherishers of her memories include her children - Priscilla Hudson McClellan; Jerry Hudson (Addonda); Patrease Jones-Brown (Tyrone); as well as, daughter-in-law, Thelma Hudson; and sister-in-law, Rosetta Jones.
Grandchildren - LaTarcha Hudson Demery (Steven); Christopher Green (Cortriece); Terrence Cleveland; Shunte McClellan; Jamaal Hudson; Trimmier McClellan; Tiana Brown; KaTia Hudson; and Mikell Brown.
Great-grandchildren – Christopher Green; Cristie Bell; Justus Demery; Camya Green; Carter Lock; and Kairo White.
A host of nieces, nephews and cousins; in addition to loved ones, friends and neighbors, who - held her in deep regards, offered helping hands, left care packages, kept a watchful eye, and checked on her. Special acknowledgment - Lizzie Burgess, Gloria Brown, Shenika Chisolm, Marie Thompson, Essie Bowles, Vivian McFadden, Thelma Ackerman, Alice Jackson, Patricia Memminger, Susan Alls, Ellison Brown, Tyrone Jenkins, Richie Johnson, Douglas Stephens and the staff of the Pruitt Health Facility.
And so now as this chapter closes, we shall relish in the memories we hold dear and trust in God’s promise which tells us, Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
