Mrs. Mary Wells Singleton Varn, the youngest of eight, born to the late, Deacon Mose B. & Maggie Williams Singleton; was born December 3, 1962, in Walterboro, South Carolina. Reared in the Roadside community of Yemassee, South Carolina; she was educated in the public schools of Colleton County, where she graduated from Walterboro High School class of 1982. Mary wanted to further her education and enrolled into Denmark Technical College.
During her lifetime, she was a person who believed in working. After high school, she became a cook on the Cherokee Plantation. She than began working with the former CCX Manufacturers, which then changed to New York Wire, until the plant would finally close its doors for good.
To know Mary was to love life itself. She loved singing and had the voice of an angel. She would sit and listen to music and just have the time of her life, especially when her favorite artist, “Tucka” was on the radio. Not only was music her specialty, but so was cooking. She was known far and near for her culinary skills, and she would let it be known that there weren’t many (if any) who could hold a spoon in her kitchen.
During the afternoon hours of Wednesday, November 23, 2022, Mary departed from this earthly life, while at the Colleton Medical Center of Walterboro, South Carolina. Along with her parents, she is also preceded in death by three sisters, Lorraine Singleton, Reverend Sallie Brown, and Jessie Mae Jenkins, and one brother, Mose B. Singleton, Jr.
Left to cherish the essence of her life are; husband, Cleland Varn: three sons, Brandon (Latamara) Singleton, Troy Singleton and Clevontea Singleton: three grandchildren, Sincere, Savion and Aria Singleton: two sisters, Mozelle Bradford and Shirley Whitefield: one brother, Kenneth (Linda) Singleton; stepdaughters, Chastity Brooks, LaKeshia Moultrie, Savannah Varn and Sadie Williams: sister in law, Marcie Washington; brothers in law, Gerald Varn and Reverend Herbert Brown; two lifetime friends, Patricia Floyd and Detra Green: along with a host of numerous other relatives and friends.
