Mary Eliza Fishburne Singleton, daughter of the late Vernell Fishburne Green, was born on October 29, 1944, in Walterboro, SC. She was raised by her grandparents, Issac and Betsy Middleton Fishburne. During her younger years of life, Mary accepted Christ Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She became a member of Saint John Baptist Church under the tutelage of the late, Rev. R. M. Youmans. She was educated in the public school system of Colleton County. Upon completion of her education, she graduated from Colleton High School in 1962. Shortly after graduation, Mary relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. While in residing in Charleston, she began her committed service and employment with the Medical University of South Carolina, retiring in 2000. After retiring from MUSC, Mary enjoyed attending and working with the minor league baseball team, Charleston River Dogs. While residing in Charleston, Mary met and united in holy matrimony to Albert Singleton in 1963. This union was blessed with one son, Terry Singleton. In 2009, Mary decided to return to her native home of Walterboro, SC, where she enjoyed attending her home church, watching the Dallas Cowboys play, and spending time with her family and friends.
On Monday evening, March 6, 2023, Mary answered the call of the Lord to enter from labor to reward. Though she is gone from this natural life, her legacy, her smile, and her love will live in our hearts forever. Preceding her in death along with her parents and grandparents are her son, Terry Singleton, siblings, Moses Williams, Heyward Williams, and Betty Singleton: aunts and uncles, whom were raised with Mary as her siblings; Betty L. Behling, Hebert Fishburne, Nettie F. Miller, and Henrietta F. Sanders
She leaves to cherish a lifetime of memories to her sisters, Barbara (Richard) Singleton and Florence (Henry) Pinckney both of Walterboro, SC; brother, Matthew Green, Jr. of Walterboro, SC; two uncles who were raised as her brothers, Alexander (Edna) Wright of Walterboro, SC and Rev. Nathaniel (Lynn) Fishburne of Ridgeland, SC; one uncle, Diral Miller of Walterboro, SC; aunt, Eva N. Fishburne of Walterboro, SC; grandchildren, Terry Stevens, Ahmad Stevens, and Julius Stevens all of Charleston, SC, Michael Stevens of Charlotte, NC, Shiyreka Singleton of Columbia, SC, Kendrell Singleton, and Jamiya Singleton of Walterboro, SC; thirty-two great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; caregivers, Michelle Williams, Virginia Smith, and Denise Jenkins of Walterboro, SC; her MUSC and Charleston RiverDog’s friends, and longtime friend, Nathaniel Frazier of Charleston, SC; along with a host of numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends.
