The fond memories of the life of Mother Martha Lee Bryant Washington; forever reign in the lives of her beloved children, family and friends. Mother Washington, 86, was a resident of Charleston, South Carolina; but long time native of Green Pond, South Carolina.
Graveside Services honoring her legacy will be held on Saturday: May 9, 2020 at eleven o'clock in the morning; Mount Olive AME Church Cemetery, 285 Mount Olive Road, Green Pond, South Carolina. Public visitation for our dearly departed will be held on Friday: May 8, 2020 4:00-6:00 P.M. at the mortuary. In compliance with the recommendations of the C.D.C. and in response to Covid-19; the visitation will be conducted as follows: The staff will allow four people to visit at a time at three minute intervals, along with exercising social distancing.
Martha Lee Bryant Edwards Washington transitioned to her eternal reward on Sunday, May 3, 2020, at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Martha Lee, the elder of twin daughters, was born to Jake and Rebecca Bryant on April 21, 1934. She was joined in holy matrimony on September 26, 1954, to John B. Edwards, in a joint wedding ceremony with her twin sister, Mary Lee Young, and brother-in-law, James Young.
She was raised in Green Pond, SC. She attended public school in Colleton County and is a graduate of Colleton High School. Upon completing high school, she relocated to New Jersey. She lived several decades in Passaic,New Jersey, where Martha worked as a seamstress with Passaic Sportswear Company. In 1972, she relocated back to Green Pond.
On December 23, 1972, Martha married Herbert Washington. Martha and Herbert became active members of Mt. Olive AME Church in Green Pond, SC.
Martha continued her career as seamstress at Walterboro Dress Factory until retirement.
In addition to her father and mother, Martha was preceded in death by her late husbands, John B. Edwards and Herbert Washington, as well as her siblings: Kathleen McKinney, Rev. Bertha L. Givens, Sam Bryant, William V. Bryant, Mary Young, and Jake Bryant, Jr.; and one daughter, Emma (Washington) Jones.
Martha is survived by her four sons: Francis B. Edwards(late Judy), of Charleston SC; John B. Edwards Jr. (Cheryl), of Passaic, NJ; Lloyd Edwards (Teai), of Charlotte, NC and Lyndon Edwards, of Green Pond, SC; and one Daughter, Ella (Washington) Simmons (William),of Point South, SC and one sister, Florence McCormick, of Hollywood, SC. Martha has fourteen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host other relatives and friends.
