Deaconess Marilyn Wright Mitchell was born on November 4, 1955, to the late Laura Lessington Wright Hodges and David Wright in Green Pond, South Carolina. She received Christ at an early age. She attended Green Pond Elementary School and Walterboro High School. She later obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies from Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina.
After completing her studies, Marilyn established herself in Atlanta, Georgia. Marilyn married her loving husband, James W. Mitchell on December 26, 1981. Together, they raised their three children, Dewell, Laura, and James T.(JT). The Mitchell‘s joined Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church in 1979. Marilyn was a dedicated servant leader, serving in multiple ministries. Marilyn served as Assistant Treasurer, Coordinator of Mt. Ephraim Super Seniors (M.E.S.S), Leader of the Greeters, and Jr. Usher Board Advisor. She also served as Convention Liaison where she participated on the Dis- trict, State, and National levels. Marilyn became active with the General Missionary Baptist Convention (GMBC) of Georgia, Inc. in 2003, serving in many capacities: Ushers Ministry, Youth Ushers’ Director, Women's Auxiliary Treasurer, and Deaconess. She was also an active member of GMBC's 5th District including the Women’s, Ushers, and Deaconess. She was serving as Deaconess Chairperson. She was a dedicated member of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. Ushers & Nurses Auxiliary for many years. Further, she served as the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. Ushers & Nurses Auxiliary’s Recording Secretary from 2008 - 2019. Marilyn volunteered as a Girl Scout leader at Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church. She later became the Service Unit Director for the Martin Luther King Jr Service unit, mentoring many young ladies in the city of Atlanta.
In her professional finance career, Marilyn served the federal government for a total of 39.5 years. She worked different roles at the Internal Revenue Service, Fort McPherson, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She retired in 2019 but continued to serve her community through her volunteer roles. Marilyn volunteered at the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia. She helped inform her local com- munity about the disease. She continued serving at Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church where she spearheaded the 50th Year Pastoral Celebration, organized numerous food drives, and served in whatever capacity needed to fulfill the mission of the church.
Her pleasures and hobbies included her home garden (enjoying the fruits of her husband’s labor), cooking for her family, and being a servant leader. She took pride in being meticulous with every task to ensure every detail was addressed correctly. One of her mottos was “Do it right.” Additionally, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Laura Hodges, father, David Wright, sib- lings: Leroy Wright, David Wright Jr, Robert Lee Wright, Rosa Mae Wright, Janie Sethna, Willie Wright, brother-in-law Benjamin Mitchell, and nephews Stacy Wright, Kendrick Hodges and Kenny Wright.
To honor her memory and carry on her legacy, she leaves her beloved husband James W. Mitchell, three children, Dewell Mitchell (Shay) Kennesaw, GA, Laura Mitchell (Atlanta, GA), James T. Mitchell (Chicago, IL), and granddaughter, Madison Mitchell. Sisters: Nadine Wright (Brooklyn, NY), Maybelle Wright Harris (Robert) Queens, NY, Evelyn Wright (Laurel, MD),Yassiemine Hodges (Baltimore, MD). Brothers: Rev. Robert Hodges (Rose) Hollywood, SC, Rev Kenneth Hodges (Patricia) Beaufort, SC, Cornelius Hodges (Gertie) Bronx, NY, William Hodges (Delores), Green Pond, SC) Joel Hodges (Lydia, Bennett’s Point, SC). Sister in- laws: Thelma Wright (Charleston, SC), Gladys Wright (Charleston, SC), Lilly Wright (Brooklyn, NY), Rose Mitchell (Lyons, GA), Gwendolyn Mitchell (Lyons, GA), Doris Mitchell (Lyons, GA). Brother-in-laws: Freddie Mitchell (Fayetteville, GA), Kenneth Mitchell (Deborah), College Park, GA, Russell Mitchell (Tracye), Valdosta, GA, Phil Mitchell (Dothan, Al). Aunt: Christine Washington (Charleston, SC) and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
