Sister Jacqueline Holmes Brown, affectionately known as 'Jackie,' peacefully answered God's call to enter into eternal rest on Saturday, January 21, 2023. She was the tenth of thirteen children born to the late Deacon Eugene and Sister Aratha Holmes, on May 13, 1952. Jacqueline gave her life to the Lord at an early age and became a member of Trinity AME Church in Round O, South Carolina.
After beginning an education in the Colleton County public school system, Jacqueline moved to New York. She graduated from Clara Barton High School in Brooklyn, New York, earning a secretarial studies certification. Shortly after that, Jacqueline earned an internship within the judicial system of New York, for which she started a prominent secretarial career. Jacqueline soon moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she secured clerical positions at the Greater Boston Real Estate Board and PricewaterhouseCoopers (formerly Price Waterhouse). Jacqueline returned to South Carolina and continued secretarial work, landing Clerk to Council for Colleton County in the fall of 1985. Honored to hold this position, Jacqueline worked hard and filled any office with her infectious laugh. Known in the Walterboro area for being helpful, Jacqueline lent her clerical services to those who needed a resume and other written documents.
In 1992, Jacqueline found love and was united in Holy Matrimony to the late, Jerome Brown.
Jacqueline remained Clerk to Council until she retired in the winter of 1994. Given that she loved working with the public, she returned briefly to the workforce part-time at Colleton County Probate Court. She also gained extra mobility with assistance from the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department.
Jacqueline cherished a few other positions: being a grandmother, aunt, sister, and, most of all, a mother. Jacqueline did not let her circumstance stop her from enjoying a vibrant life. She enjoyed reading, cleaning, watching Law & Order, and a good nap. She also loved Sunday school and spending time with family, especially during Christmas.
Along with her parents and husband, she is also preceded in death by; siblings Rosalie Wallace, Dorothy Aiken, Horace Holmes, Vincent Holmes and unnamed Holmes; and son, Jermaine Holmes. She leaves to cherish her many memories: daughter: Tremika Rashana Middleton of Clayton, N.C.; two grandchildren: Antwane Latrell Folk of Charlotte, N.C. and Kiandre Latrell Middleton of Clayton, N.C.; a great-grandchild: Mahji Keon Raines; three brothers: Odell Holmes of Whitehall, S.C., Willie C. Holmes (Betty) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alex J. Holmes (Joan) of Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters: Lucretia Perry (Grover) of Myrtle Beach S.C., Carolyn Bryan (Oliver) of Round O, S.C., Diann Holmes, and Mildred Holmes, both of Ladson, S.C.; two special nieces: Vanessa (Olin) Pearson of Laurens, S.C. and Remi "Pookie" Mills (Norman) of Raleigh, N.C.; and a longtime best friend: Earthalee "Janice" Campbell; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
