In profound sorrow we announce the transition of Mrs. Ethel L. Stephens, 85, of Yemassee, South Carolina. The Matriarch of her family; she will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who loved her. As service arrangements have been updated, please continue to keep the bereaved family in your prayers for peace and comfort.
Mrs. Ethel L. Chisolm-Stephens daughter of the late William Chisolm, Sr. and Retha A. Chisolm
was born on December 4, 1937, in Walterboro, South Carolina. She was the eldest of her siblings.
She attended the local public schools of Walterboro, South Carolina.
At an early age she accepted the Lord Jesus as her redeemer and savior and became a member of
Mount Nebo Baptist Church, Yemassee, South Carolina. She was baptized under the pastorship
of the late Rev. Mannie C. Chisolm. She was dedicated and served faithfully. She loved and enjoyed going to church to dwell in the presence of the Lord.
Mother Stephens lived a life of enrichment. On March 28, 1959, she was joyously joined in holy
matrimony to the late James S. Stephens. Together they shared a beautiful life of 50 years and
were blessed with three children. For a short period of time, she was employed by J.P. Stevens
Walterboro, South Carolina. She then went to Sky City Dept. Store where she worked faithfully
until they went out of business. She then ventured to Oakwood Nursing Home in Walterboro working as a kitchen aid staff member.
On Tuesday October 31, 2023, at the Oakbrook Health and Rehab Center in Summerville, South
Carolina She quietly made the transition to her eternal home. She brought so much love, joy,
comfort and kindness into the lives of her husband, children, family and lots of friends. She will be sorely missed by many.
Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her loving husband, James S. Stephens,
Brother; William Chisolm, Jr., and two sisters; Annie Ruth Fryar and Virgie Ree Chisolm.
She leaves to cherish her memories her three children: Dennis J. (Tia) Stephens, Vickie S. (Tony)
Campbell, and Bruce E. (Geraldine) Stephens all of Yemassee, South Carolina, Five
grandchildren; Brandon, Shakeri, Sierra, Alexis and Denzell. Four great grandchildren;
Kaidence, Kennedi, Gabrielle and Skylar. One brother; Alfred (Eleanor) Chisolm, of Yemassee,
South Carolina, Brothers-in-law; Nathan (Ruby) Stephens and Paul Stephens of Islandton, South
Carolina, and Charlie Smith of Augusta, GA, Sisters-in-law; Dorothy (Edward) Murdaugh of
Hampton, South Carolina, Caroline (John) Williams and Mary M. Stephens of Islandton, South Carolina and Thelma Stephens of Spartanburg, South Carolina. She also leaves to cherish numerous nieces, nephews cousins and caring friends.
