Obituary

Mrs. Dora Brown Washington, daughter of the late Joe & Hattie Elliott Brown; was born on November 13, 1942, on the Cherokee Plantation of Yemassee, South Carolina.  Educated in the public schools of Colleton County, Dora graduated with the Colleton High School class of 1962.  Stepping into her adulthood, Dora relocated to New York where she would begin her life for many years.  She was employed as a front desk clerk for the Foster House of New York. 

At an early age, Dora was baptized and became a member of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church of Yemassee, South Carolina, under the leadership of the late, Reverend Mannie C. Chisolm.  Finding love, Dora was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Marion Washington, and this union would be blessed with two, wonderful children.  To know her was to know a jewel.  A loving mother, cherished grandmother, sister, aunt and friend; the essence of her life will forever leave an impact on the lives of all who knew and cherished her. 

On Thursday: April 27, 2023; Dora traded her time on earth for an eternity with her Lord and Savior. Along with her parents, she is also preceded in death by: brothers, Charles Brown and Joe Roberts: sister, Emma Delaney Watson: brothers in law, James Ford and Albert Watson: and sisters in law, Reverend Sallie Brown and Beth Washington.

Left on this side to embrace the portraits of her life are: children, Alfonso (Cheryl) Washington, Delores (Henry) Lassiter and Ada (Ralph) Callahan: grandchildren; LaQueena (Ty) Williams, Quintin, Alfonso, Jr., Charmaine, Tamia, Donna, Melissa and Kisha: sisters, Pearl (Deacon Nathan) Richards, Queenie Ford, Greta (Robert) Watson, and Patricia (Mark) Broughton: brothers; Reverend Herbert Brown and Edward Roberts: sisters in law, Sharon Brown, Johnnie Mae Roberts, Maerene (Franklin) Delaney, Viola (Leroy) Jenkins, Earnestine Washington and Lucille Robertson:  brothers in law; Sandy (Lisa) Washington, Archie (Olamae) Washington, Spencer (Carolyn) Washington and Bernard (Angie) Polite: adopted brother, Joe B. Elliott: aunts, Ada Ferguson, Sarah Bing, Annie Ferguson and Georgette (James) Frazier; special friend, James Pete: along with a host of numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
