Mrs. Barbara Dinkins Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Deloise George Dinkins was born on August 1, 1944 to Charles and Grace George in Bamberg County, South Carolina. On March 18, 2021, Barbara transitioned from labor to reward, while surrounded by her loving family, in Columbia, South Carolina. She was educated in the Colleton County school system and a graduate of Colleton High School in 1962. She later matriculated to Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, where she met the love of her life, George Arnett Dinkins, Jr. She and George were joined in holy matrimony on May 20, 1967. To this union, two daughters were born. As a faithful military wife, Barbara made a wonderful life for her family as they lived in several military stations throughout the United States. While stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina she was elected mayor of Anzio Acres and held that position for four years. Upon returning to Walterboro, South Carolina in 1987, Barbara became employed with the Colleton County School District and remained until her retirement.

Her early spiritual life began at Hickory Hill United Methodist Church in Smoaks, South Carolina. She then became a member of Rock Ages C.M.E. Church, where served faithfully as
the church secretary, as well as a member of the Usher and Stewardess Boards. The Lord later moved her to New Life United Methodist in Walterboro, South Carolina. She wore many hats at New Life to include the Usher Board and worked with the Youth Usher Board and Acolytes. She served diligently until her health began to decline.

To her family, Barbara was so many things: family historian, photographer, trusted confidante, coffee buddy, and faithful servant of the Lord. She was the one that everyone rushed to share
good news with because to hear her say, “I’m just so proud!!!”, made a person feel like they were standing ten feet tall. If there was one thing that everyone knew about Barbara is that she
loved her family immensely and would do everything in her power to support and encourage them.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Charles and Grace George; husband, George Arnett, Jr.; and sister, Leatrice Wright. Left to remember and rejoice in her memory are her loving and dedicated daughters, Dr. Angela N. Smith (Scottie) of Columbia, SC and Barbra Michele Dinkins of Walterboro, SC; grandchildren, Kamilah Coleman of Charlotte, NC, Talmadge Coleman of Columbia, SC, Kendall Bryant-Dinkins of Walterboro, SC, Kedrick Coleman of Columbia, SC and Stanford Smith of Allendale, SC; one great grandson, Dreyton Bryant; one sister, Rev. Sandra Winfield (Rev. Larry) of Walterboro, SC; two brothers, Kenneth George of Walterboro, SC and Stephen George (Maike) of Richmond Hill, GA; two brothers-in-law, Dullie Wright of Walterboro, SC and Dayle Dinkins of Sumter, SC; and one aunt, Collette George of Fort Lauderdale, FL; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and a best friend, Mrs. Retha McKenzie. The family would like to acknowledge and express their deepest appreciation to Matt, Lisa, Katie, Bret, and Wendy of Comfort Care Hospice for their care of Barbara during her illness.
