Obituary

Mr. Tommy Lee Thomason, son of the late Ella Mary Wells; was born March 16, 1948, in Greenville, SC. Tommy was proudly raised by his late grandparents, Carrie Sue and Jessie Thomason. He attended Sterling High School. He migrated to New York in the 70’s for a better life and more opportunities. There he would create and live a fruitful life, working hard to raise his seven children. He earned a living as an independent trucker, traveling across the Tri-State Area for over thirty years.

A devout Christian, and man of God Tommy became a member of Rush Temple A.M.E. Zion Church in Jamaica, NY; where he served as a member of the EGI Ensemble, Men’s Choir, Male Usher Board and Steward. He continued his journey growing closer to God under the ministerial leadership of Rev. Melvin L. Tate. He joined St. Peter’s AME Church, under the ministerial leadership of Rev. Leon R. Maxwell when he relocated to Walterboro, SC.

Tommy spent his days on the phone talking to his favorite uncle Allen Thomason, and enjoyed spending time with his wife Rebecca, whom he shared a wonderful life with. Together they traveled and owned successful businesses, a clothing store, a trucking company, and a soul food restaurant. Affectionately known as “Uncle Tommy,” “Mr. T,” or “Pops”: if you knew him then you knew he was a man of wisdom and love. He enjoyed sharing stories of his life experiences to teach others. Tommy also enjoyed dancing, playing pool and cards, and having a good time. His infectious laugh will be sorely missed. During the morning hours of Wednesday: March 29, 2023, a “golden heart” stopped beating, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and so much more;
transitioned from mortal to immortality, as he departed from the shores of time. He is preceded in death by one daughter, Shana Thomason.

Tommy leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife Rebecca: his children, Christien Thomason (Chelsey), LaTomya Doctor (Tony), Shannon Thomason, Shonda Thomason, Tamika Thomason-Fall (Modou), Tomell Thomason (Sarah) and Tommy Thomason, Jr. (Sharon): two brothers, Charles Ledbetter and Stanley Wells: four sisters, Mary Ledbetter, Sandra Wells, Lorraine Williams and Darlene Wells: two brother in-laws, Charlie Holmes (Shirley) and Ricky Holmes (Jacqueline): five sister in-laws, Mildred Gunn (Peter), Florrie Levine, Alily Washington (Sonny), Glossaree Holmes, and Barbara Holmes-Goodwin: fourteen grandchildren, Quanisha, Tanajah, Tarneisha, Tomell, Jr., Tamia, Madison, Jireh, Zaniyah, Tiarrah, Toni, Tyler, Mohamed, Evan and Robert: four great-grandchildren Jamar, Bryceson, Timothy and Naviegh: along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
