Mr. Paul McPherson, Jr. Obituary

Mr. Paul (Junior) McPherson, Jr., was born on November 7, 1947, in Green Pond, South
Carolina to the late Paul and Florrie B. (Shepherd) McPherson. He was one of ten children.
After a lengthy stay in the hospital, he quietly slept away on October 4, 2023, at the Medical
University of South Carolina, in Charleston, South Carolina.
Paul graduated from Colleton High School in Walterboro, South Carolina. Paul was a
talented illustrator. All of his siblings were able to get high grades in their science class
assignments because he drew precise anatomical drawings. He was naturally creative in
drawing.
In his early childhood his right leg was injured due to doctors’ negligence. He spent more
than four years in and out of the hospitals to correct the injury. His final stay in the hospital
resulted in him being in a cast for six months from his toes to the upper part of his chest.
During that time, he made a concerted effort to maintain his classwork. Then, while he was
in high school, he had his first major episode with epilepsy, which he suffered with during
his entire life. Through it all, Paul never complained about the pain he endured or how he
was inconvenience by his physical limitations.
After graduating from high school, Paul attended Denmark Technical College, where he
received a certificate in tailoring. With this skill he worked for a number of years at the
Marine Corps Base, in Parris Island, South Carolina making Marines Corp uniforms. Due to
his early foot injury, he had to retire with disability because of the pain he endured from
sitting with a stiff leg all day. However, after retiring Junior’s love of tailoring continued as
he designed clothing for himself to accommodate his stiff leg and did tailoring for his family,
friends, and members of the community, including ministers in the surrounding area.
Paul gave his life to Christ and became a member of Mt. Olive AME Church in Green Pond,
South Carolina. Throughout his life he and his brother Jerry were very close. In the family,
when we would talk about them it was always “Junior and Jerry.”
Paul was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna (Carolyn) McPherson, Ernestine Frazier,
and Pearline (Pauline) McPherson Ancrum; and three brothers Robert McPherson, Julius
McPherson and Nehemiah McPherson.
He is survived by three sisters, Nancy Alice Washington (Thomas) of Ridgeville, SC, Hazel
McPherson Cameron (Leslie), Lanham, MD and Vertel McPherson of Landover, MD; and
one brother James Jerry McPherson of Green Pond, South Carolina; along with a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
