Mr. Louis B. Richardson, son of the late Fred G. Richardson and Jestine Manigo Richardson, was born on July 4, 1937, in Walterboro, S.C. He received his primary and secondary education here in Colleton County, graduating as a Wolverine in the Class of 1955. While there, he was not only a student bus driver, but he also sang in an all-male quartet.
Affectionately known as “Bernard”, he attended St. Peter’s AME and Hopewell Presbyterian Church. It didn’t take long for him to recognize that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with his sweetheart, Margaret H. Gant. They were wed in holy matrimony on December 26 not long afterwards.
His love for long-distance driving led him to Newark, New Jersey, where he drove for Inland Freightways, Cober Transfer and Thompson Materials for a total of forty years. During that time they were blessed to have three children who all shared his love of music.
Upon retiring, he and Margaret returned to their birthplace (Walterboro, S.C.) and he became “Mr. Fix-It”, a great handyman, and an expert gardener, growing not only vegetables, but also sugar cane. He took great pride in being Grandpa (Pop-Pop), and in meticulously grooming his land. Bernard was a faithful follower of Television Evangelist, Frederick K. C. Price. He was led to give his life to the Lord as a result of this ministry.
Years passed by and a few health challenges as well as injuries took their toll on him. He was ready to go home and voiced that fact for many days before his actual passing, the early morning hours of Sunday, April 23, 2023.
Louis Bernard was preceded in death by: both parents, eight of his nine siblings and his son, Matthew Anthony Richardson. He leaves to cherish his many memories his loving and devoted wife, Margaret H. Gant-Richardson; brother, Freddie Richardson (Carmen); daughters, Barbara Richardson-Washington, and Cynthia Richardson-Sipp; grandsons, Quantis Lamar Richardson, and Alan Bernard Washington; granddaughter, Carlise Faith Washington; four great grandchildren and host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
