It was a joyful day in Savannah, Ga, on December 19,1953, when Mr. Joseph Bennett Jr., entered this world. Born to Joseph Bennett Sr. and Carrie Polite-Bennett, he was the seventh of seventeen children. Joe was such a bubbly and inquisitive toddler. His grandmother, Arabell Polite, started calling him “Butterball”, and that nickname stuck with him for a few years. He was very ambitious and industrious. As a kid, he worked many odd jobs. He took much pride in giving his little monies to his mother, just to “help the family out”. It was during this period that he developed his strong work ethics.
As a child, he attended the Ebenezer 7th Day Adventist church; and he enjoyed the children’s choir and being active in the Pathfinder’s Club. He was educated in the public-school systems in Philadelphia and New Jersey. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled in the Community College of Philadelphia. After a year in college, he decided to enlist in the United States Army. This is where he really began to soar. After completion of basic training, in Fort Dix, New Jersey, he was stationed in Fort Campbell, in Kentucky. He quickly began to move up in the ranks and within no time, earned the rankof Staff Sargent. He loved this position almost as much as he loved traveling and serving in various states and countries.
Joseph was a loyal and giving friend and he enjoyed life to the fullest. He especially loved working in his garden and just sitting on his porch, with his wife. To know Joseph was to love him and he never met a stranger.
Joseph was recently united in Holy Matrimony to Ms. Barbara Taylor, on October 25, 2016, and they would share their years together, until his passing. During the midday hours of Monday: June 19, 2023, after battling an extensive illness, Joseph entered his immortal slumber. Preceding him in death along with his beloved parents, are: one grandchild, Jojo Bennett, and siblings: Ruth Dela Cruz, James Bennett, and Anita Gore.
Left to embrace the legacy of his life, are: his loving wife Barbara Taylor Bennett: three children, Joel ShawnBennett, Candace Bennett, and Jillian Bennett, all of New Jersey: step-children; Renee (Brandon) Nix and Ramont Taylor: mother-in-law, Janice Scott: grandchildren;Neveah Destini Bennett, Ashawni Marie Bennett, Amani Marie Bennett, Alana Marie Bennett and Joel R.
