With a grateful heart, we pause to honor the memories of the life of Mr. John Henry Washington.
Mr. John Henry Washington, son of the late Sylvester and Isabell Washington, was born January 3, 1940, in Savannah, Georgia. John was raised in the Ritter area of Walterboro and received his formal education in the public schools of Colleton County. As a teenager, John relocated to New York, and he began his own life. He realized and acknowledged his passion for wanting to be in the trucking industry. As an adult, John obtained his CDL and would become a successful professional long haul truck driver. He would travel across the country for over fifty years until his retirement and he would continue to reminisce on the good ole days.
As a man that findeth a wife, findeth a good thing, so did John find his “Good Thing.” He was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, Mrs. Ernestine “Christine” Colleton. This union would be blessed with many years of love and two wonderful children, John and Pamela.
During his youth, John regularly attended the Cumberland United Methodist Church of the Ritter Community of Walterboro. After relocating back “South”, John rejoined Cumberland, and was a active member until his health began to decline. Not only did he love the Lord, but he also loved giving praises to God. He loved listening to old gospel songs and hymns. As he was a man of love, he loved his family, and demonstrated it through all that he did.
During the afternoon hours of Tuesday: December 20, 2022; John traded time for eternity and departed from this earthly shore. As his presence has left a void, his memories will forever be a portrait of love to all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death along with his parents are siblings, Morris Smith, Beatrice Simpson, Geneva Frazier, and Herbert Washington.
Left on this side to embrace his fond memories are; loving wife, Ernestine “Chris” Washington of the home: John Washington of Atlanta, GA; Pamela (Brendan) Reese of Lawrenceville, GA; Steve (Katina) Cook of Rochester, NY; and Lorraine Davis of Staten Island, NY: one beloved sister, Shirley Hudson of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Taylor and Sydney Reese, Jerome Washington, and Jamia and Sharise Cook: special adopted granddaughter, Zara Manigo: several great-grandchildren; sisters in law, Mary (Amos) Bowman, Martha Lemon, Bettye (Johnnie) Colleton, Alice (Albert) Williams, Betty Colleton, and Carole Washington: special cousin, Ginger Richards; devoted nephew, Willie “Cookie” Simpson; along with a host of numerous other relatives and friends.
