He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of
the Almighty. “Because he loves me, “ says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I
will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me,
and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and
honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
Psalm 91:1, 14-16
John Lee Brooks, affectionately known as “Pocket” to
friends and family, was born May 17, 1941, in Green Pond,
South Carolina to the late Reverend William Brooks Sr. and
Lillie Mae Givens Brooks. He journeyed home to be with the
Lord on May 31, 2022, at the age of 81.
John moved to the state of New Jersey during his early adult
years where he met the love of his life, Mary Sheffield
Brooks. Their union was blessed with a ready-made family of
one child and the birth of two more children. John loved God
and his family above all. He became a member and served
many years as a devoted Trustee of Mount Zion Missionary
Baptist Church in Paterson, New Jersey before retiring to the
state of Georgia.
John worked as a machine operator for Public Service
Energy and Gas Company for 30 years until his retirement.
He loved to work with his hands and could fix just about
anything. His words of wisdom were frequently sought after
by family and friends alike. He enjoyed family gatherings with
the occasional spirited card game, fishing and watching his
favorite baseball teams; the Atlanta Braves and Mets battle it
out on television. John touched many lives through his love
of people and never met a stranger. He had a giving heart,
and his life was driven by integrity and faith.
Although he faced challenges with his mobility over the last
few years, his mental fortitude remained unyielding until the
very end. He never complained and would always say, “we’ve
got to do what we can and let go of what we can’t.”
John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary
Sheffield Brooks; sons, Ricky Sheffield (Martha) & John
Brooks (Shawnita); daughter Talitha Brooks-Andino (Paul);
grandson, Matthew Andino; granddaughters, Camisha
Feggins, Tiffany Sheffield, Jhordyn Brooks and Gabriella
Andino; siblings Harry Brooks (Barbara), Reverend Dr. Eloise
Brooks McCrimmon, Lillie M. Brooks-Cline, Mariah Mack
(Holland), Almaretta Brooks-Nance and Dr. Beverly Brooks-

Fannie Sheffield, Jessie McKesson, Sarah Sheffield (Ronnie);
brothers-in-law, Sam Sheffield (Dollie) and Fred Sheffield
(Shirley) and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews
and cousins. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Evangelist Dianne Brooks-Prioleau and Rev. William Brooks,
Jr. whom he now joins in heaven.
