Mr. James "Henry" Dukes, affectionately known as "Sonny Boy", the oldest of seven children born to the late Charlie Mae Dukes Barlow was born on December 20, 1943. James was called home on Saturday, January 21, 2023, while residing at Pruitt Health in Walterboro, SC.
James was raised in the home of his grandparents, the late Charlie Dukes, and May Bell Desaussure Dukes. He was a loving father, grandfather, and brother. Though a man of few words, he never met a stranger. His smile would either light up the room or make you want to run for cover.
Early in life he joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Walterboro, SC. He was educated in Colleton County School system and a man of services to his community. For many years he safely, responsibly, and punctually delivered many community members to their destination of choice as he served as a taxi driver for Red Bennett Taxi Service. Later in life he dedicated many years of employment service at Walterboro Veneer Company where he took pride in his work as a laborer.
Preceding him death along with his mother and grandparents are great-grandson Devyn Roosevelt Williams, two brothers, Herbert Dukes, Muaawain M. Sabur (Frederick Blue), and brother-in-law Otis Jones
He leaves to cherish his memories, three children, Kevin Dukes (Jocelyn) of New Jersey; Jennifer Pinckney of Charleston, SC and James Dukes of Walterboro, SC ; four grandchildren Devona and Montel Generette of Charleston, SC; and Destiny & Sharday Dukes of New Jersey; two great- grandchildren, Dia Renae Williams and Devon Rell Williams; four siblings: Elbert O. Winfield (Rhonda) of Jacksonboro, SC, Rev. Larry Winfield (Sandra) of Walterboro, SC; Shirley Jones of Florida; and Wanda Johnson of Walterboro, SC; sisters-in-law Cheryl Dukes and Betty Blue; along with host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and life-long friends.
