Mr. Herbert Washington Obituary

“ O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureth forever.” Psalms 107:1

Mr. Herbert Washington peacefully departed this life on September 27, 2021 while at the Trident Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina. Fondly known to all as, “Herbie or Slim”; Mr. Washington was born on June 9, 1944, in the Ritter Community of Walterboro, South Carolina to Mr. Sylvester & Isabelle Simmons Washington. He was educated in the public school of Colleton County. At the age of eighteen, upon his graduation, Herbert relocated to New York to begin his career. In 1977, during his time in New York, he met and fell in love with the woman of his dreams, Carol Pope.Within a year later, June 1987, the two became one and were joined in Holy Matrimony. This union would be blessed with one son, Jason, along with two bonus children, Wendell and Terri Pope, who would precede him in death.

Herbert Washington had many jobs throughout his lifetime. However, he aspired to become a fire prevention specialist. His focus concentrated on servicing the restaurant industry throughout the state of New York. His passion for providing the service led him to start his own business where he serviced some of the most well known restaurants in the Northeast. For over 40 years his commitment to the service provided a means of income to a plethora of young men that were fortunate enough to cross his path. He gave all an opportunity. He personally trained and guided each individual he employed. He was the epitome of what it meant to be a Black Owned Black Operated business, gaining the respect and appreciation from all his clients.Humbled in spirit, yet full of love, life and laughter: he will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He is also preceded in death by: three siblings, Geneva Fraiser, Beatrice Simpson and Morris Smith.

Left to cherish his fond memories are: devoted, beloved, and partner of forty five years, Carol Washington: one loving son, Jason (Latoya) Washington: three grandchildren, Steven Pope, Cadence Washington and Lyric Washington: one sister, Shirley Hudson: and one brother, John (Chris) Washington: along with a host of numerous nieces, nephews, cousins extended family and friends.
