Mr. Bernard Payne, Sr. (affectionately known as Bernie), was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, born on January 20, 1951, to the late Albertha S. Payne and Edward V. Payne, Sr. He peacefully passed from this life on October 24, 2021, after a valiant fight with kidney disease, diabetes, and other ailments and is finally resting with no pain.
Upon receiving his high school diploma at W. Gresham Meggett High School in James Island, South Carolina, Bernie enlisted in the United States Army to follow in the footsteps of his big brother who was already serving in Vietnam. Bernie served as a Paratrooper and Parachute Rigger, became an Expert Rifleman and received the Parachutist Badge and the National Defense Service Medal before being Honorably Discharged. Bernie left the Army and went on to support his growing family as a Welder at Charleston Naval Shipyard.
Bernie is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alfred Payne and Paul M. Payne, Sr. (Regina Payne - also deceased).
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: his wife, Eyvonne “Pat” Payne of Cottageville, SC; one brother, Edward V. Payne, Jr. of Cottageville, SC; three daughters, Katrina R. Payne of Walterboro, SC; C. Wondella Payne of Knightdale, NC; Lateisha L. Payne (Tiffany V.
