Mother Minnie Thomas Obituary

The Essence of a Matriarch

Mrs. Minnie Lee Thomas, the daughter of the late David and Ether Folk Grant; was  born September 8, 1930, in Lodge, SC. She was called home to be with the Lord on September 24, 2022.

Minnie was joined in marriage to the late Purcell Thomas, and this union was blessed with two children, James Harold Thomas, and Vivian Thomas.

Minnie relocated from South Carolina to New York in 1960. While in New York, Minnie was blessed with three additional children; David Allen Hall, Regina Garcia and Louis Garcia, Jr. Years later, she adopted her three grandchildren, the late Keisha Parker, Takia Parker and Joy Parker. Not only did she make an impact in the lives of her immediate family; but she touched, fed, loved, chastised, and embraced all the children in her Taino Towers Community in New York, for over twenty-five years.

In 2003, Minnie returned to South Carolina.  She continued living her life through her avid faith in God. A true “Mother” to all,  she possessed a quiet spirit and soft smile that made her who she was, and often imparted wisdom, every chance that she got.  She also was known for her “hands of gold”, as she loved cooking and fed any and every one whom she encountered. In addition to all of this, she also loved her plants and had her own botanical garden.

Preceding her in death along with her beloved parents and husband are: two beloved sons, James Harold Thomas, and David Allen Hall: granddaughter, Keisha Parker: life-long partner, Louis Garcia, Sr.: sisters; Jeannie Martino, Mary Turman, Evella Grant, Elaine Wright, Audrey Mingo and Ruth Mae Shands: and brother, David Grant, Jr.

Her loving memories will be cherished by her two devoted and loving daughters; Vivian Thomas and Regina Garcia: son, Luis Garcia “Chicky”, her special nephew, whom she reared as her own, Stan Wise:  fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren: along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, all who will forever embrace her kind spirit and gentle smile.
