Mother Dorothy Hodges White

Dorothy H. White, 90, of Walterboro, SC, passed away on 08 February 2026 in Orangeburg, SC after an extended illness. She was born to parents Willie C. Edwards and Valley L. Clayton, on 24 October 1935 in Varnville, SC (Hampton County).

She graduated from Colleton Senior High School in 1969. Dorothy worked as a laboratory assistant at the local hospital in Walterboro for many years. She then worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Oakwood Nursing Home, now known as Pruitt Health, for 29 years before retiring.

Dorothy married Harvey Hodges on 06 April 1951 in Walterboro, SC. Together they raised 6 surviving children and had a union spanning 52 years before they were parted by death. Later in life, Dorothy married Nathan White.

Dorothy enjoyed fishing and dearly loved her pets. She was a faithful member of Sandhill Baptist Church until her health declined.

Affectionately known as "Aunt Dot", Dorothy was loved by all. She was a positive influence in the lives of everyone she met. Dorothy generously and graciously helped raise nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, and her home became a safe landing spot for those in need.

She was preceded in death by three infant children; her mother, Valley Clayton; her father and stepmother, W.C. (Sara) Edwards; husbands, Harvey Hodges of Walterboro, SC and Nathan White; her son David Hodges of Walterboro, SC; her sister Shirley Stephens of Walterboro, SC; her brothers Robert Clayton of Walterboro, SC; Guy Jenkins of Walterboro, SC; and Richard Jenkins of Walterboro, SC and sons-in-law, Robert Grant of Summerville, SC and Larry Thompson of Walterboro, SC.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory: five children, Barbara Grant of Summerville, SC; Annie (Jesse) Miller of Walterboro, SC; Joyce (James) Myers of Orangeburg, SC; Melvin Hodges of Ladson, SC; Kennerdy (Anna) Hodges of Walterboro, SC; three sisters, Cathy (James) Mack of Columbia, SC; Bernie Kennedy of Walterboro, SC; Ernestine Jenkins of Hawaii; three brothers, James Jenkins of Walterboro, SC; Terry (Gina) of Charleston, SC; Joe (George Mae) Louis of Orangeburg, SC; sister-in-law, Gloria Jenkins of Walterboro, SC; special nieces, Lisa Stephens of Walterboro, SC; Jackie Sanders of Walterboro, SC; Pamela (Nate) Holmes of Rincon, Georgia, Robin (George Jr.) Fields of Moncks Corner, SC; Theresa Clayton of Walterboro, SC; special nephew, Edward Breland of Miami, Florida; a beloved friend, JoAnn “China” Pinckney of Walterboro, SC; 22 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
