Mother Berthell Broughton Obituary

I will finally get to thank him when I kneel before his throne, for all the times he carried me; when I couldn’t carry myself. Home at last, cares are past, never more to roam.

Mother Berthell F. Broughton, born June 8, 1945, in Walterboro, South Carolina, was the beloved daughter of the late Samuel Folger and Bertha Drain. She was educated in the Colleton County public school system.

At an early age, Mother Berthell accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined Bethel United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully. She later became a devoted member of Bethel #5 Holiness Church, serving as an usher until her health no longer allowed.

Mother Berthell was united in holy matrimony to Joseph Arthur Broughton, Jr., and their union was blessed with five children. She worked with Sears, also as a DSS Foster Parent for many years and Colleton Manor until her health failed.

In her quiet moments, Mother Berthell enjoyed watching her favorite television show, Walker, Texas Ranger. She also loved sewing and was widely known for her delicious cakes.

After courageously battling a series of illnesses, Mother Berthell transitioned from mortality to immortality early Sunday morning, July 26, 2026, surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Arthur Broughton, Jr.; her son, Terrance L. Broughton; her daughter, Linda M. Linnen; her brothers, Lawence Drain, Sr., Issac Drain, Woodrow Drain, Jr., Johnny Lee Folger; and her sister, Rosa L. Risher.

Cherishing her memory are her children, Casey Broughton of Ruffin, SC, Christopher Broughton and Marie Broughton, both of Walterboro, SC; her grandchildren, Monroe Linnen, Antonio Linnen (Senovia) and Deontae Washington; ten great‑grandchildren; her sister, Rose Little; her brothers, Willie Drain (Joann), Jacob Drain (Mary), and Abraham Drain; her aunts, Mildred Yates and Mable Broughton; her sister‑in‑law, Lula Broughton (Bishop Howard); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mother Berthell’s life was one of faith, service, and quiet strength. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who loved her.
