Sister Mildred Holmes, affectionately known as "Midge" peacefully answered God' s call to enter into eternal rest on Saturday, December 14, 2024. She was born on May 16, 1957, as the thirteenth of thirteen children to the late Deacon Eugene and Sister Aratha Holmes.
Mildred dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age and became a devoted member of Trinity AME Church in Round O, South Carolina. Just a week prior to her passing, she rededicated her life to God, rejoicing in the promise of Heaven, where she will be rejoined with her family.
Mildred graduated from Walterboro High School in 1975 and earned an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree from Trident Technical College in 1995.
Her professional journey led her to become an Insurance Collection Representative at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, where she served from November 2000 until her
retirement in November 2023. Known for her exemplary work ethic, she received numerous certificates and awards, reflecting her dedication and outstanding performance. Mildred was excited about her retirement, looking forward to enjoying life and traveling.
In addition to her professional achievements, Mildred was a devoted community servant for over 40 years, offering her expertise in tax preparation to friends and family. Each year, she could be counted on to file their tax returns with professionalism and an ever-present beautiful smile. Mildred’s passion for cooking was a treasured asset that endeared her to her family. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, her soul food creations brought joy to gatherings, especially to those who eagerly looked forward to her warmly saying: “Let me fix you some dinners to take back home.” Above all, Mildred cherished her roles as a sister and aunt, and she shared a special bond with her sister, Diann Holmes. They were life mates and best friends from birth to her final days. As a lifelong caregiver to her parents and sister, Diann, Mildred's warm, loving, and beautiful spirit will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
Mildred leaves behind a legacy of love and countless memories, including her two brothers: Willie C. Holmes (Betty) of Brooklyn, NY, and Alex J. Holmes (Joan) of Atlanta, GA.; three sisters: Lucretia Perry (Grover) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Carolyn Bryan (Oliver) of Round O, SC, and Diann Holmes of Ladson, SC; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnephews, grandnieces, other relatives and many friends.
Her family and community will forever be grateful for the gift of Mildred’s life—a life marked by love, service, and profound faith.
