To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 KJV
Martha A. Smalls, was number six of the ten children, born to Millard Filmore and Ethel B. Smalls. She was born on September 13, 1933.
She completed her education in the Colleton County school system and consequently, graduated from Ruffin High School, in the Class of 1952. Later, she migrated to Brooklyn, NY as many others did in that era to obtain better employment opportunities.
Martha joined the family church, McCune Branch, at an early age. She and her sister, Mary, remained in close fellowship with the church after their relocation to the North. They enjoyed fellowshipping and reminiscing with old friends and family at McCune Branch, while vacationing in South Carolina. However, while living in Brooklyn NY, Martha worshipped at Bridge Street A.M.E. Church.
After she arrived in Brooklyn, she began working as a beautician at Pretty Post Inc. Martha exemplified a propelling determination to excel in her new profession. Because of her zeal, she worked as an entrepreneur for over 50 years before retiring.
Martha was very talkative and could converse in almost any subject matters. However, black biblical history and black American history were two of her strongest conversations. Lastly, she gave much love and help to her family on both sides.
Preceding her in death was her parents and 6 siblings.
Martha leaves one loving sister to cherish her memories, Ms. Mary S. Smalls of Brooklyn, New York; two brothers, Mr. Roosevelt Smalls of Princeton, Kentucky and Mr. Thomas Smalls of Brooklyn, New York and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and a longtime friend and first cousin, Emma Lee Rhem of Babylon, Long Island.
