Remembering Her
Martha Colleton, affectionately known to all as “Big Sister,” transitioned peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly. Born on May 27, 1949, in Walterboro, South Carolina, Martha was a beacon of warmth, laughter, and unwavering love.
A Heart for the Community
Martha, originally of the Ritter community, was the kind of person who didn’t just enter a room—she illuminated it. She was always "treeing " for something. She possessed a legendary sense of humor that was second to none, often catching friends and family off guard with a wit that left them laughing long after she’d finished speaking.
She was very protective of her children and her family. She always had a new cousin to introduce.
Beyond her gift for storytelling, Martha had a profound and boundless love for children. She was a cornerstone of the community, babysitting children from one end of Colleton County to the other. Her home and her heart were always open, and she leaves behind a generation of young people who grew up shaped by her kindness and guidance.
Family Ties
Martha was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Lucy and Will Colleton, and her siblings: Lemar Colleton, Lennon Colleton, Louise Aiken, and Lucille Alls.
Her vibrant memory will be cherished and kept alive by those she leaves behind:
Her Children: Charles (Emily) Lemon, Denise Lemon, Shiahime Williams and Andrew (Pandy) Jenkins
Her Grandchildren: Charles L. Lemon IV, Charlese L. Lemon, Cordell L Lemon, Joi C. Bouges, Keyrone S. Lemon
Her Great Grandchildren: Amir, Jahzara, Jayceon, Jada, Kyree, James, Kingston and Keyrone, Jr.
Her Sisters: Mary (Amos) Bowman, Betty Jean (Johnny) Colleton, Ernestine (John) Washington, and Alice (Al) Williams.
Extended Family: A plethora of nieces and nephews, as well as the many children of Colleton County who viewed her as their own "Big Sister."
Special Friends: Martha Ann Smalls and Gina Lisbon
Martha lived a life that was a testament to the power of family and the simple joy of a shared laugh. Whenever her health allowed, she enjoyed fellowship at Cumberland Methodist Church. While she is no longer with us, the warmth she shared remains in the hearts of everyone she touched.
