Joe Evans Obituary

Mr. Joe Lee Evans was born on September 8, 1928, to the late Rosa Ferguson Evans and the late Benjamin Evans, Sr. in Green Pond, SC. He was one of thirteen children from that union. He entered into eternal rest on the evening of Saturday, July 27, 2024, at New York Presbyterian’s Allen Hospital with loved ones by his side.

He attended the public schools in Green Pond, SC. After attending school, he was employed as a Carpenter in Jacksonboro, SC. During his time in the south, he was blessed with three sons: Rodney Givens, Ralph Givens, and Monday Milton. After several years of employment, he ventured to Bronx, NY where he was welcomed by a host of family members.

During his early years of living in New York, he lived with several of his brothers and his sister. Mr. Joe Evans began to live independently and eagerly accepted the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as his savior. He joined and attended Friendly Baptist Church in Bronx, NY. He consistently attended worship services under the leadership of the late Reverend Albert Sutton, Sr.

Joe Evans enjoyed spending time with family, shopping, going to church, and buying new suits. You could always catch him strolling down 3rd Avenue in the Bronx, looking for new suits and his signature straw hat. He committed his senior years to babysitting his niece. He walked her to and from school each day, no matter the weather.

After 14 years of committed service and a lifetime of memories in New York City, he decided to return to his roots in South Carolina. While living in Walterboro, SC he fearlessly traveled the busy roads on his electric scooter to shop in the stores and greet his neighbors within the community. He journeyed to New York City for the last time in June 2019.  During his stay, he spent time with family and friends, posed for many photos, and remained grateful for his blessing of a long life.

Mr. Joe Lee Evans is survived by his son, Rodney Givens, daughter-in-law, Annie Mae Givens, and six grandchildren; sister, Mary Thomas; brothers, Johnny Evans and Nathaniel Evans, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. In glory, he will meet his mother, Rosa Ferguson Evans; his father, Benjamin Evans, Sr., his brothers, Josephus Evans, William Evans, Benjamin Evans, Jr., and Harold Evans; his sisters, Rosa Lee Gathers, Lilabell Fraser, Louise Sholes, Florence Manigo, and Alberta Reid; his sons, Ralph Givens, and Monday Milton.
