James Brooks, Jr. was born June 24, 1945, in Green Pond, South Carolina to James and Bessie Brooks, who preceded him in death. He was the sixth of eight children born to this union. Three of his siblings preceded him in death, Ruth Brooks Evans, George Brooks, Sr., and Katie Brooks Orr. Macky, as he was affectionately called, went home to be with the Lord on September 14, 2025, at 9:59 am. He was presently residing at NHC Healthcare Nursing Home in North Augusta, South Carolina. During his illness, his siblings and niece advocated for him to ensure he received the best care possible.
Macky grew up in Joshua A.M.E. Church in Green Pond, South Carolina, and at an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He became an active member and served in various capacities. He sang on the choir, served as an usher, and was recognized as a leader in the church. Macky enjoyed going to church and serving God with praises and songs. His love for singing motivated him to join a choral group in which he was a committed member. One of his favorite songs is “I am going to stay under the blood.” Macky loved the Lord and often spoke about how God is ever present in his life; and how He continues to meet his needs.
He was educated in the Public School System and graduated from Colleton High School in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was employed at Veneer Paper Mill Plant in Green Pond, S.C. where he worked as a Laborer for many years. He was a responsible family man who assumed full responsibility for taking care of the household while his parents’ job, took them away from home at night. He was instrumental in helping to raise his nieces and nephew, Janet Brooks, Deborah Brooks Williams, and Gregory Brooks.
Macky met and married his wife Karen Shark Brooks in Walterboro, South Carolina and a daughter, Katrice was born to this union. He also has a son, James Chisolm, from a previous relationship.
