George Edward Dobison, Sr., the fourth of six wonderful children, was born on September 26, 1951, in Colleton County, South Carolina, to the late Willie Chris “Pop” Dobison and the late Annie Vernell Hodges Dobison. He departed this life on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at Magnolias of Santee. During his early years, he was a member of Oakman Branch Church alongside his parents.
He received his formal education and graduated from Ruffin High School, Class of 1970. He married the love of his life, Ruby Nell Vanhorn, on April 17, 1979, and thereafter, moved to Brooklyn, New York; to this union, four amazing children were born.
George was an avid transit driver. One of his most rewarding jobs was Hoyt Transportation, where he had the pleasure of ensuring that students arrived safely to and from their destinations in a timely manner; even though in his personal life, George was always late.
He was skilled in making luxury carpets, effective at giving clear directions; always wanting to tell someone the best route to get somewhere. He was a man of many passions who enjoyed all genres of music, singing, dancing, golf and fishing; and he genuinely loved his family.
George was always smiling and finding ways to bring joy to others. He was spoken well of while he lived and even after his transition.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chris Dobison and Reather Henderson Dobison; and his sister Carrie Bell Dobison Edwards.
George leaves to cherish his beautiful memories; his beloved wife of forty-six years, Ruby Nell Dobison and children; eldest daughter, Tamika (Pastor George G.) Dobison-Simmons of Walterboro, South Carolina; eldest son, Corey (Topeka) Vanhorn-Dobison of Summerville, South Carolina; middle son, George (Janice) Dobison, Jr. of Clinton, Maryland; youngest daughter, Ladasia Dobison of Central Islip, New York; and bonus daughter, Shatieka Hudgins of the City of Atlanta; seventeen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers; Willie J. (Annie Mae) Dobison of Walterboro, South Carolina; Chris J. Dobison of California; Clyde (Magnolia) Dobison, Sr., of Walterboro, South Carolina; Charlotte (Eon) Dobison-Stewart of Saint George, South Carolina; Hattie Wade of Walterboro, South Carolina; Julie Fishburne of Walterboro, South Carolina; three brothers-in-law, Rufus Vanhorn, DonEarl Vanhorn and Edward Earl Vanhorn; two sisters-in-law, Brenda (Johnny) Jones and Annie Vanhorn; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
