George J. Cox, son of the late John Francis Cox, Sr. and Thelma Gadson Cox, was born February 22, 1943, in Colleton County.
George received his education from Colleton County Schools. After high school graduation, he moved to New York and joined the U.S. Navy.
While serving in the U.S. Navy he married his high school 4/11/1964 sweetheart Mary General. From this union came three daughters.
George spent over 20 years working for the New York Transit Authority and thereafter returned to South Carolina.
After returning to South Carolina, he was employed as a school bus driver with the Colleton County School District Transportation Office.
At an early age George was a member of Jerusalem A.M.E. Church where he served as a trustee, and later he went on to become a member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church where he served with the Knights of Columbus.
George’s sister Mildred Griffin and brothers Eugene, Willie, and Tyrone Cox, all preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memories; his loving wife, Mary Cox, 3 children, Cathy Cox, Sandra Klass and Lisa Cox, his sister, Hazel Brunson, brothers, John Cox, Henry (Marsha) Cox, and sister-in-law, Gertie (Cornelius) Hodges, along with a host of nieces and nephews whom he held close to his heart, his “favorite” Gabrielle Cox, Godchild Kishia Cox, as well as many other relatives and friends.
