Freeman Ferguson Obituary

Freeman Ferguson, affectionately known by many as “Mule Skinner,” was born in Walterboro, South Carolina, and raised in the small, close-knit community of Roadside. He was the beloved son of the late Clint Woodrow Ferguson and Essie Colleton Ferguson, both of whom have been called home to be with the Lord.

Educated in the public school system of Walterboro, Freeman entered the working world at an early age. Over the course of more than 30 years, he dedicated his life to the art of landscaping—beautifying the land around homes and businesses with his skilled hands and keen eyes. Gardening and planting became more than just a job—it became a passion. Friends and family often said he inherited that gift from his parents—his mama “Big Wheel” and his daddy “Deek.”

Freeman honed his landscaping talents at Wildwood Nursery of Walterboro, and later, with Ackerman Landscaping & Irrigation, founded by Billy Ackerman Sr. and later run by Billy Ackerman Jr. At Ackerman Landscaping, Freeman found more than a workplace—he found a second family. He continued to work with them periodically, up until his final hours.

Known for his hardworking nature, humble spirit, and joyful soul, Freeman made friends everywhere he went. He was full of life, wisdom, and good humor. His stories could fill a room with laughter, and his presence made every space warmer. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and extended family, always striving to bring joy to their lives.

A special bond was shared with his niece Brittney ("Pooh"), who was his go-to for everything from cell phone repairs to figuring out his medication—especially when he couldn’t read the label because he was too busy chatting under the tree in his yard.

Freeman was a master of spontaneous cookouts. He’d throw something on the grill—usually just 2 or 3 packs of meat—and somehow make it stretch for everyone. He’d shout for “Cat” to whip up some sides, and she’d reply with a laugh, “Furman must be thinking this grocery store,” but she’d still do it, just because he asked. He’d send word through family—"Call Pooh, Neisha, tell them to call Tammy, Chandler, Roscoe (Charles Jr.), Stacey, and don’t forget Cecel (Cecelia) and Frank—just make sure they don’t drive in the dark!" Those gatherings were more than meals; they were memories.

Freeman loved music, dancing, and believed he was the #1 James Brown dancer. When the music came on, so did the wisdom. His sayings were legendary: “And da book... ah tell you that,” when something was true. “You have to be in the deal to know the deal,” when something didn’t sound right. And his classic advice: “You have to be in the deal to know the deal—you know dat!”

He faced life’s challenges with strength and faith, always standing firm with the "Big Man above." His courage and resilience earned him the nickname "Mule Skinner"—a tribute to his unbreakable spirit and hardworking nature.

Freeman was called home on September 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clint Woodrow Ferguson and Essie Colleton Ferguson and sisters, Rebecca Ferguson and Daisha D. Ferguson.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Francez Litia Green; son, Freeman Wilson; grandchildren, Zariah Aundrey Faith Melton and Devon Freeman Wilson; siblings, Robert Ferguson (Elnora) of Ladson, SC, Cecelia H. Rhoden (Frank) of Walterboro, SC, Charles Ferguson of Walterboro, SC, Lucyann Green (David) of Whitehall, SC, Clyde Ferguson (Pamela) of Walterboro, SC, Caselene Ferguson of Roadside, SC, Josephine Ferguson Anderson of Walterboro, SC and Tyrone Ferguson of Roadside, SC along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will forever remember his warmth, humor, and wisdom.

Freeman’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His legacy—built on laughter, love, and unforgettable cookouts—will continue to bring smiles for generations to come.

Rest well, Mule Skinner. We’ll see you under that tree again one day.
