EDYTHE TUCKER HAYNES, a devoted educator and community leader, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Born on June 18, 1936, in Cottageville, South Carolina, she was the beloved daughter of the late Prince Tucker, Sr. and Elizabeth Fields Tucker.
A LIFE OF SERVICE AND EDUCATION
Edythe's commitment to lifelong learning began in the Colleton County Public School System and led her to South Carolina State University, where she earned both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. Her professional journey spanned over 30 years in education, culminating in her retirement as a School Psychologist for Charleston County Public Schools. In retirement, her dedication to students continued as she served as Vice Chair and member of the Charleston County Schools District 10 Constituent School Board.
FAMILY AND LEGACY
In 1962, Edythe was united in holy matrimony to Benjamin F. Haynes, with whom she shared a devoted life until his passing in 2000. She was also preceded in death by their cherished daughter, Frenee' Nichole Haynes.
A LEGACY OF FAITH, SISTERHOOD, AND SERVICE
A woman of profound faith, Edythe was raised in Wesley Grove United Methodist Church and later became a member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church. There, she served faithfully as Treasurer for many years. Edythe's commitment to service extended deeply into her community through her involvement in several prestigious organizations. She was a proud Charter Member of the North Charleston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she spent a lifetime embodying the values of sisterhood and scholarship. Her passion for community enrichment was further reflected in her active memberships with Jack and Jill of America, the Washington Park Garden Club, and the Continental Society. Through these circles of friendship and service, Edythe left an indelible mark on the lives of those around her, always striving to uplift her community and nurture the next generation.
She was preceded in death by her parents; late Prince Tucker, Sr. and Elizabeth Fields Tucker; her beloved husband, late Benjamin Franklin Haynes and daughter; late Frenee' Nichole Haynes; one sister, Eartha Mae Tucker and three brothers: Joe Lloyd Tucker, Prince Tucker Jr, and Alphonsus Chisolm; one niece, Princess Tucker Roberts; nephew, Charles Williams; Mother-in-law, Amanda Haynes; Father-in-law, Burley Haynes; two sisters-in-law, Janie Ruth Tucker, Gloria Rice and one Brother-in-law, Leroy Rice.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Ms. Helen Tucker Bodison, devoted niece, Dr. Chantelle Bodison Teasdell (Raymond), special niece, Miss Zeporia Tucker, honorary daughter, Mrs. Kathy Robinson (Thomas); two Sister-in-laws: Mattie Tucker and Elsie Haynes Jarido (Laurie); nieces: Sharon T. Williams, LaTeisha Harrison (Tyrone), Deidre Gladney (Gerald), Juanita Tucker, Teresa Chance (Sidney), Doris Simmons (Randy), Laurinetta Reed (Jimmy), Barbara Patterson, Cheryl Jarido, Rogetta Jarido, Sandra Harrison (Timothy) and Susan Coaxum (James); nephews: Dwayne C. Tucker, Alton Chisolm, Adrian Chisolm, John Roberts, Desi Haynes (Annie), Patrick Rice, Travis Rice, Antwain Jarido, Cedric Jarido and Gerald Rice; Honorary nieces: Leona Partis (Tony), Misha Cleckley and JaNene Blow;
Godchildren: Nathaniel Lawton Rollerson, II, Asya McKinney, Dr. Kelsi Williams, Haley Roberts, Malachi Millan, Laurienetta Jerido Reed and Asha Amanda Simmons.
She is further survived by a host of dear friends who will carry her legacy of kindness and leadership forward.
