Earldean Powell Obituary

“Well done, good and faithful servant... enter into the joy of the Lord.”
—Matthew 25:23

Obituary
Quietly and peacefully, on Sunday, June 8, 2025, God called Earldine V. Carey from labor to
reward.

Born on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1952, in Green Pond, South Carolina, Earldean was the sixth
of nine children born to the late Charlie Carey Sr. and Susie Jenkins-Carey. From a young age,
she asserted her individuality and insisted on being called “Earldean”—a name and identity she
wore with pride throughout her life.

Earldean graduated from Colleton High School in May 1969. She later moved to Paterson, New
Jersey, where she attended William Paterson College, majoring in psychology, and then
transferred to Savannah State College in Savannah, Georgia. After her studies, she began her
professional career in the Psychiatric Department at Saint Joseph Hospital in Paterson. She later
returned to South Carolina to care for her aging parents, and began her second career working in
the Walterboro Public School System.

She was married to Oliver Powell, and although the marriage ended in divorce, it remained a
chapter in her story. No children were born of this union.

In May 1965, Sister Earldean Carey joined the United House of Prayer for All People in
Walterboro, SC, where she received the gift of the Holy Ghost. She served faithfully on the
Junior Female Usher Board and helped maintain the Holy Mountain. Upon returning to
Walterboro, she resumed active service in the beloved House of Prayer always giving God
everything.

Earldean had no biological children, but she was a guiding presence in the lives of her many
nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was a straight shooter—always offering honest
advice, encouragement, and a helping hand grounded in God’s word. Her impact reached across
generations.

She was an exceptional cook, especially known for her Sunday dinners—greens, fish, and
cornbread. Earldean valued cleanliness, had a flair for fashion, and was a trendsetter with her
elegant church hats and outfits. Her love of music and dancing added joy to every gathering.

More than anything, Earldean demonstrated her deep love and respect for her parents by moving
in with them during their final years to care for them with devotion and dignity.
