Deacon Alton Walters Obituary

Deacon Alton Walters entered his eternal peace on Monday: June 6, 2022, while in the comfort of his home, in the Hendersonville Community of Yemassee, South Carolina.  The son of the late, Susie & Rufus Walters, he entered this world on July 24, 1939, also in Hendersonville.  He was educated in the public schools of Colleton County and graduated with Colleton High School class of 1959.  After graduating high school, Alton moved to Boston, MA. Several years later he returned to his native home and married the love of his life, Ms. Faye Wilkey.  To this union, five children were born.

Alton and Faye, then moved back to Boston, MA, where Alton became employed with Children’s Hospital for several years.  After those years, they both returned to Hendersonville to raise their family.  Alton then became employed with Dayco Corporation for several years, until he became a custodian with the Colleton County High School, where he would finally retire from after many hard years.

At an early age, Deacon Walters became a member of St John Church of Lord Jesus Christ, where he received the gift of the Holy Ghost.  In the years to follow, he became a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and the Treasurer of the Finance Department.

To know Deacon Walters, was truly an honor. He wore many hats, and never complained about anything. His smile, his demeanor, and his wisdom were all true characteristics of God inside of him.  A soft-spoken giant, the legacy that he has left will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.  Preceding him in death along with his parents are, three sons, Daniel Patrick and Christopher: along with six brothers and two sisters.

Left on this side to embrace fond memories are, his loving wife, Deaconess Faye Walters; one daughter, Lavern (Frankie) Fryar; sister, Mary Howard; two brothers in law. Harvey Williams and Elder Bobby Bazzell; six sisters-in-law, Celestine Bazzell, Susan Ann Wilkey, Ruth Wilkey, Susan Walters, Edna Wilkey, Francine Walters, and Edith (Isaac) Goodwin; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; along with a host of numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
