Anderson Grant, Jr. Obituary

Mr. Anderson “Andy” Grant, Jr. was born on September 21, 1952, to the late Mr. Anderson Grant, Sr. and the late Viola Grant.

He was educated in the segregated school system of Colleton County, graduating from Colleton High School in 1970. He went on to complete his higher education at Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina, graduating in 1974 with a B.A. in Business Administration.

He was employed for many years as a tax specialist before branching out to provide his own tax service to the community that he lived in and loved. He was also blessed with a gift of carpentry and worked as an independent handyman providing whatever service may be needed.

Andy was a fierce advocate for his community, serving in any capacity to ensure our history was preserved and/or recognized.  He literally died standing up for his community’s preservation, leading a charge against attempted erasure on Cooks Hill.

Andy was involved in many church and civic organizations in Catholic Hill, Ritter, Walterboro, and surrounding areas, too many to name, but a few must be noted. He was initiated into the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., at Voorhees College, Spring 1973. He was a member of Douglass Lodge #277 Prince Hall F&AM, serving as Past Worshipful Master.  He was a member of the NAACP.  He was a member of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He also was very passionate about baseball and founded the local team in Catholic Hill.

He was a lifetime member of Isaiah United Methodist Church. He served his church in any capacity that was needed. He was strongly devoted to his family and was the best resource for family information. His love for family knowledge permeated every bit of his being, and he proudly shared this knowledge with everyone.

He was united in holy matrimony to Maeliza Ravenell, and to this union, three children were born. He later married Carolyn Simmons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Floyd Eady, James Eady, and Irvin K. Grant, Sr. and a nephew, Irvin K. Grant, Jr.

He transitioned from labor to reward on December 16, 2025, and is survived by his loving children: Ms. Jacy D. Winfield, Dr. Cheryl (Omar) A. Smith, and Mr. Craig (Sonya) A. Grant, Sr.; his brother, Mr. Douglas Grant; Uncles Douglas Bright and Harry Bright; Grandchildren: LeBlanc Winfield, II, Keyondra Whitehead, Craig Grant, Jr., Nayrone Holmes, Laila Winfield, Peyton Grant, Billy Grant, Chloe Smith, and Chase Smith; Great-grandchildren Kaisen Carson, Amelia Grant, and Kieland Carson; special cousins: Thomas Grant, Ella Mae Cooper, and Roberta Watson; sister-in-law Ada Grant; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
