Respectfully, we honor the life of Mr. Leroy Nathaniel Callender. Mr. Callender, 87, is the beloved husband of Mrs. Jackie Lewis Callender, and resident of Walterboro, South Carolina.
Mr. Leroy Nathaniel Callender, born February 29, 1932, is a graduate of City of College of the City University of New York (B.C.E., 1958) He attended Brooklyn Technical High School noted for its academic excellence, and graduated in 1950 first in his class in architectural design. Attending City College at night, he worked as a draftsman for a major structural engineering firm. He was also drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952, assigned to a special drafting school, and then sent to Korea where he designed small office buildings and other facilities. Honorably discharged, he completed college, joined another engineering firm and worked on the first nuclear power plant built in the East-the Consolidated Edison plant at Indian Point, N.Y. Founded in 1969, his own firm has provided consultation on the $3.2 million dormitory and student union buildings for Mary Holmes College in West Point, Miss; the $6.3 million Whitney M. Young Complex in Yonkers, N.Y.; the $30-million Lindsay-Bushwick Houses in Brooklyn, N.Y., and the $14 million Douglass Circle project in Manhattan.
August 16, 2019, he transitioned into his immortal home, and leaves his memories to be cherished with: loving wife, Jacqueline Callender and one son, Eric Callender, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
