Mr. Charles Williams (U.S. Army - Vet) Obituary

Respectfully, we honor the legacy of the life of, Mr. Charles Edward Williams. Mr. Williams, 91, is a native of Walterboro, South Carolina. 

Mr. Charles Edward Williams, affectionately known as “Wicky Charles”, Began his life’s journey on December 07, 1927 in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was the only child of Eugene and Joan Lewis Williams.

At an early age Mr. Charles went to live with his aunt Carrie Pitts, who love and nurtured him as her own. He attended St. Peters AME Church, where his Grandfather was a founding member.

Mr. Charles attended Penn Center, St. Helena Island, SC and continued his education, and graduated from Colleton County Training School. After graduation he held numerous jobs in his community.

Mr. Charles enlisted in the United States Army in 1946 and served in BOTH WWII and the Korean War. Completing his service to his country, Mr. Charles relocated to Kansas City, Kansas with his Uncle Johnny Pitts.

Mr. Charles became a proud member of Laborer’s International Union of North America, Labor union #1290. Through this membership he gained employment as a Forman for Kansas Department of Transportation. While residing in Kansas, Mr. Charles became an active member of St. Peters Christian Methodist Episcopal Church of Kansas City, Kansas. Upon retiring he returned to Walterboro and reunited with his St. Peters AME church family. Mr. Charles served faithfully in various rolls and positions in the church. He was the President of the Male Choir, President of The Trustee Board, member of The Finance Committee, Steward Board and The Brotherhood of St. Peters Church.

Mr. Charles was blessed with three children from his first marriage to the late Mrs. Eloise Barnes Williams of Cottageville, SC.

On January 20, 1956, Mr. Charles was joined in matrimony to Mrs. Marie Etta Sheilds Williams, of Cheraw, SC. They were happily married for sixty beautiful years.

Mr. Charles enjoyed various hobbies. He refurbishing antiques furniture, he was a collector of Jazz and Classical music (30’s 40’s and 50’s era), and he was an amateur photographer. Mr. Charles never met a stranger; he was always willing to share a funny joke or a story. He was a diehard fan of the Kansas City Chief Football Team.

Mr. Charles earned his wings and entered heaven’s gate on November 13, 2019 at Trident Medical Center of Charleston, SC.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Marie, his dedicated son Eugene L. Williams, a caring daughter Sharon M. Williams, cousin/sister Ida Jennings Banks and cousin/daughter Regina Powell.

Mr. Charles memory will live forever in the heart and mind of his beloved son, Glenn A. Williams (Gloria Yvonne) of Walterboro, SC, a loyal and affectionate daughter-in-law, Linda Singleton Williams of McClellanville, SC, grandchildren, Serena Williams Becton (Charles)of Lithonia, GA, Mark A. Williams of Queens, NY, Natasha S. Williams of Austell, GA, Iris Williams Finley (Brian) of Summerville SC, Christopher Williams of Columbia, SC, Glenda Williams of Summerville, SC and Jessica Williams, of Merrick, NY. His “Kansas City daughter” Leonetta Brown of Kansas City, Kansas, and cousin/sister Victoria Williams Jenkins of Atlanta, GA.; along with a host of additional nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
